Starting out as a model
Hey there! My name is Sharon Obara (Wakina). I am Kenyan, 21 years old. I pursue Psychology at Kenyatta University. To me, modelling has been a journey of so much learning, growth, self-mastery and discovery, that which I am grateful for. I started modelling back in 2018 around July. I had always seen modelling as a farfetched dream for me until after a few persuasions and pushes from my closest friends, to take on my first pageant, that was Mr and Miss Kajiado.
I hadn’t the slightest clue of what I was doing but with help from my then able trainers, I got the hang of it. I was not among the top but I was still so happy and proud of the progress I had made.My friends turned out in large numbers to support me and I actually remember someone telling me that I was already a winner seeing that all these people had come to support me.
They believed in me. From there I did other pageants, like Mr and Miss Birmingham Kenya, and Mr and Miss Kenyatta University. After alittle break,in 2019 I got contacted to showcase wedding gowns at Samantha Bridals Wedding Fair.It was such an honour!
From there I got to work as a brand ambassador with different brands such as Goldenlipcosmetics. Later on I saw a poster about Mr and Miss World Kenya and I decided to give it a shot. And guess what!I got selected to walk the national runway!
I learnt alot, made so many friends and really grew my network. This year I intend to take it a notch higher, and actually take up the international platform.Be it a runway or commercial and also to work with more brands and organizations. One of the greatest lessons I got to learn along the way was that, service to man is service to God.As you grow as a person and as a brand, remember to help others in whichever way you can.
Be it in a word of encouragement, your time, voluntary work, mentorship or even sharing opportunities. I currently work with children living with developmental and intellectual disorders such as Cerebral Palsy and Downs Syndrome in close relation with SEP (Special Education Professionals). When you are blessed, extend it to others.
